Tool, a popular band that debuted in 1990. They blended the ever growingly popular genre of metal with a not so popular progressive twist. The result was the very creative progressive metal genre. Using intense guitar and bass rhythms, it was very influential on today's metal. It also used very well thought out lyrics that started and ended at specific times. This added to the overall idea of the songs produced.

One of the most popular forms of metal that was formed in the 90s was nu metal. No other band did this genre better in the 90s than Linkin Park. They combined a very vigorous mixture of bass and drums and added very rap like lyrics. The combination launched the idea of nu metal being an up and coming genre. Linkin Park laid the foundation for many popular bands of the new millenium such as System of a Down and Disturbed.

Another popular combination was the mixture of pop with metal. This brought the high pitched singing of males that was popular in the 90s and combined it with catchy musical riffs. One of the best bands to take this new genre of metal was Blink-182. They brought new life to the pop genre, and unknowingly, the punk genre. For the most part, Blink-182 is responsible for most of the fans of metal. It was considered to be a middle between pop and metal.
